Shayna Dulberger Quartet / Valerie Kuehne & Michael F. Dailey Jr. / Pascali /Jonathan Wood Vincent / Jonathan Moritz Solo

Fri 3 Feb 2012 - 8: pm

Brooklyn, NY

8pm
Jonathan Moritz Solo
: He brings winding, airy lines on his tenor and soprano saxophones.

“… a rare sense of sparsity and silence…  Moritz can invoke Sonny Rollins in a scattered phrase.” – All About Jazz.

“…requiring as much concentration and patience as late-period Morton Feldman… a gorgeous, challenging gift to fans of difficult jazz who want to dig deep into the raw building blocks of pulse and melody.”  - Downtown Music Gallery.

9pm PascAli: Sean Ali & Pascal Niggenkemper. A contrabass duo featuring Pascal Niggenkemper and Sean Ali that is dedicated to exploring the terra incognita of music, sound and improvisation. The “prepared” bass is a central theme and method of PascAli’s music. Augmenting their instruments with kitchenware, aluminum cans, balloons, mallets, lampshades, and almost any other kind of found object imaginable, PascAli creates entire worlds and soundscapes out of the noises their bassesproduce in this altered state. This unique bass duo, unique even among the tiny world of bass duos, makes music that ranges from serene contemplation to manic frenzy, invoking the sounds of space and stillness on the one hand and visceral percussiveness on the other. Liberating the bass from its traditional role as an accompaniment instrument, PascAli brings the instrument into the foreground with a  tireless mission of discovering and unlocking new vistas of sonic and aural experience.

10 pm Jonathan Wood Vincent: A composer, songwriter, singer, and performance artist who has honed his body and his expressions of thought to create spontaneous, yet crafted articulations of meaning and gesture. He is known both for his wide ranging songs, semi- improvised epic story-pieces, and for associative “rants” deriving from long studies and assorted collaborations and prostrations with various long forgotten deities and demigods. He has had long, long collaborations with post Mortem neolicious scary dancer Zack Fuller, the exquisite violinist and composer Katt Hernandez, and has recorded and performed with post Torah folk rockers Girls in Trouble, alt country singer songwriter Eileen Rose, and a multilingual stripper rap band called Un Cuerpo Exquisito, and inventor/microtonalist Adam James Wilson, in addition to countless other folks. His compositions have been commissioned and performed by Anti- Social Music and members of the Seattle Percussion Collective. He has recordings on Emanem, Sony, Kimchee, J-Dub, Stone Quarry, Generate Records, etc.

11pm Shayna Dulberger Quartet: Instrumental music with 1960s Jazz/Post Punk/World influences. Original tunes by Dulberger written for herself (upright bass), Yoni Kretzmer (tenor sax), Chris Welcome (guitar) and Carlo Costa (drums). This band is creatively modern sounding with rowdy as well as tender moments. Shayna has been in the NYC scene since 2004 and is most known for her work with Ras Moshe, Bill Cole and William Parker. www.shaynadulberger.com
