Brixton 85 and Sammie and Rosie Get Laid
A special screening of the recent short drama “Brixton 85″ – a wrenching short from the UK based on the true event that sparked the Brixton riots of 1985 in South London. Beautifully shot on S16mm.
Followed by Stephen Frears’ cross-cultural drama Sammie and Rosie Get Laid (UK, 1987, 100min). After their brilliant collaboration in My Beautiful Launderette, Hanif Kurashi and Stephen Fears re-teamed for this hugely underrated celebration of multi-culturalism in Thatcher’s England. Shashi Kapoor, a corrupt Pakistani politician is haunted by his past in London, which itself is on fire from ethnic riots. Tagline: “As London burns… Sammie and Rosie Get Laid!”
