“sly, catchy mix of old-fashioned country songs” – Time Out, NY.
3rd Sun Monthly.
Alex Battles moved to New York from Ohio in 1995. He began writing and performing his songs onstage in 1999 at comedy open mic nights. In 2001, he started a country band called The Whisky Rebellion which played its first show as the first band to play Lillie’s Bar in Red Hook. In 2004, he started the Brooklyn Country Music Festival at Freddy’s Bar (later: Southpaw, Hank’s and the Bell House) and the CasHank Hootenanny Jamboree. A year later, another annual tradition, the Johnny Cash Birthday Bash started in 2005.
Battles performs regularly as a solo performer and as leader of The Whisky Rebellion (a band ranging from 4-7 persons depending upon venue constraints and the weather) and Alex Battles & The Engelberts, a rock trio with a married rhythm section.
