OC ROAD RAGE
It’s the ‘dog days’ of summer in the waning days of the endemic Capitalist empire – so let us
entertain you! This month we showcase two 1970s existentialist ‘horror’ films pitting man
against his wheels. We know Elon’s ‘all-in’ for driverless technology but we humbly suggest he
watch these first. Gas prices aren’t the the only thing to fear!
First up: it’s the 1977 saga ‘The Car,’ featuring James (‘OG’) Brolin as a small-town desert
sheriff faced with a series of mysterious deaths resulting from encounters with a spooky black
sedan. This jalopy serial slayer seems to have some kind of personal score to settle, but can its
motives really be explained? Who’s behind the wheel? Could it be – SATAN?! With Ronny Cox
and a cast of tens.
Then we take it back a bit to one young Mr. Spielberg’s man v. big truck epic, ‘Duel.’ (1971)
Originally an ‘ABC Movie of the Week,’ it follows salesman commuter Dennis Weaver (another
macho ‘70s OG). As he attempts to traverse the Mojave desert, a seemingly dilapidated tractor
trailer springs to murderous life, tailgating at first but soon making his road trip a LIVING HELL.
We get glimpses of his snakeskin boots, but who’s really making this death haul? Could it be –
So take your local public transit down to Freddy’s back room, and be glad yer enjoying a cold
one and a VHS double-feature, instead of hot rubber and exhaust fumes! Because we all want
to know who’s behind the wheel (Satan probably.)
